PicoR Ice principle of operation What you can see

The device emits short low-power radio pulses and generates radio image (radargram) of reflected signals.
The operator using the device can determine the ice thickness in a radius of 1-2 meters around himself keeping the antenna module at a height of about 0.5 m, ie without contact with the surface. For correct measurements at the point the device must be slightly jiggle up and down with an amplitude of a few centimeters.
Compact size and light weight of the device allow to hold it in one hand gradually moving on the ice surface. On the tablet or notebook screen it will be displayed radarogram with the image of boundaries between different environments (air, snow, ice, water, soil) and measured values of thickness of this environments (ice, snow).
It is possible to use the device on car, all-terrain vehicle, snowmobile, hovercraft etc. In this case antenna module is fixed on bumper or tow bar and the tablet or laptop are located in the cabin of the driver.

If you are using GPS/GLONASS receiver the track is recording simultaneously with the ice thickness signal and displayed in the program. When the tablet is online the maps of the area are loaded and the track is displayed on the map already with reference each point of the track to the appropriate measurement of ice thickness at this point. Used signal processing software allows to automatically calculate on radarogram the difference between boundaries of air-ice-water and determine the thickness of the monolithic ice.

Radio emission from the device fully complies with the FCC and ETSI limits and dozens of times less than that of a cell phone. Therefore the device is completely safe for the user.

The main program window shows the radargram with the signal reflected from the ice, the scales of thickness and number of sample. It shows layers: air – snow – ice – water. Algorithms allocate the most clear boundaries (green lines) and then calculate thickness of the layer (thickness is displayed in the window). It is possible to record the signal with a further viewing, the implementation of screenshots, making of labels in meaningful places, manual correction of the boundaries in places of failure of the algorithm.
In the parameters window it is possible the selection of optimum processing algorithm, threshold setting of the algorithm, material and dielectric constant of environment, number of boundaries, various settings of the antenna module, settings of GPS/GLONASS receiver and more.

The figure below shows a binding to the map on the example of measuring the asphalt layer thickness.

When using GPS/GLONASS receiver the track is recording simultaneously with the signal of the layer thickness, and in the program you can see on maps downloaded from the Internet at every point of the track the thickness of the layer at this point.

The figure shows the record made in the measurements of the asphalt thickness in Moscow. You can see that in upper figures the place that is indicated on the radarogram and accordingly on the map is earlier in the course of the vehicle than in lower figure.

Attention! The maps are downloaded only when the computer connects to the Internet. Generally in the mode of field measurements you do not have Internet, so maps can be downloaded in the review mode in the office.
